On this day in 1959, UNIVERSAL INTERNATIONAL PICTURES released DOUGLAS SIRK’s remake of IMITATION OF LIFE. The soapiest of soap operas, it tells the story of a struggling actress with a young daughter who sets up housekeeping with a homeless black widow who has a light-skinned young daughter who eventually grows up to shun her moms and tries to pass for white (whew!…). Directed in classic SIRK style, the cast included LANA TURNER, JOHN GAVIN, SANDRA DEE, SUSAN KOHNER and JUANITA MOORE. One of the all-time great tear-jerkers.
