On this day in 1964, actor Peter Lorre, best known for his roles in Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon, died at age 59. The Hungarian-born Lorre appeared in several successful German films before the rise of the Nazi regime, when he fled to Paris, London, and then finally the United States. He gained popularity playing numerous shady characters in films in the 1940s and continued playing character roles until his death.
