On this day in 1938, Variety reported that MGM has cast Judy Garland as Dorothy, Ray Bolger as the Tin Man, and Buddy Ebsen as the Scarecrow for the film The Wizard of Oz. However, Ebsen never appeared in the film. Over the summer, he and Bolger swapped parts, but Ebsen dropped out after just nine days of shooting when he was poisoned by his makeup. Jack Haley replaced him.
