On this day in 1938, the radio program MERCURY THEATER ON THE AIR presented the ORSON WELLS production of H.G. WELLS’ WAR OF THE WORLDS.

The program (which was a fictional drama about a Martian attack in New Jersey) aired on Halloween and started an actual panic among hundreds of thousands of listeners who believed they were listening to a real news broadcast. Ah, for the good ol’ days of radio.
