On this day in 1939, Columbia Pictures released MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON starring JAMES STEWART, JEAN ARTHUR and CLAUDE RAINES.

Directed by FRANK CAPRA, the story told of an idealistic young man appointed to a senate seat. MR. SMITH is a story of its time and today seems pretty anachronistic but still manages to tug at the heartstrings.
